Out With the Old, In With the New

It's a new year y'all! We've had time to plan, goal set and celebrate a new year.I love the feeling of a fresh start, fresh vibes, and a fresh clean, organized home. This time of year is a great time to clean through the closets, cabinets, pantries etc and get rid of the old and bring in the new. Let's talk through my top 3 places to organize to get a fresh start in your home in 2018.

  1. The closet is a must. You can approach this a couple of different ways. The ultimate goal is obviously to rid the space of clothing and shoes you no longer wear. You could do so by simply going through and clearing things you know you haven't worn in some time. I usually ask myself "Can you remember the last time you wore this?" "Would you miss this if you got rid of it?" "Does it still fit?" Doing so usually allows me to easily decide if I want to keep it or let it go. Oprah also has a clever method to this. It's the closet hanger experiment. Peter Walsh describes it by saying "Turn all the clothes hanging in your closet so that the hangers face back-to-front. For the next six months, if you wear an item of clothing, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct way. If you try it on but decide not to wear it, make sure you put it back with the hanger turned backward—no cheating." Cleaning your closet is the perfect time to clear some space and organize. The Container Store is my happy place and a great starting point to shop on your way to organizing.
  2. The Kitchen pantry needs some TLC. Let me be honest. I'm so guilty of finding random, new things in the grocery store and confident that I'm going to try it out. Six months later....it's all still sitting in my pantry uncooked and forgotten about. (I'm going to do much better about that). So, I make it a point to thoroughly clean it out twice a year. Get rid of expired things and organize. You can put cereal in dispensing containers and pasta and rice in individual containers as well and label them. Rather small or large make the most of your pantry space by keeping it organized in a way that works just for you.
  3. The infamous junk drawers (insert daunting music here):  I know what you're thinking. "It's a junk drawer. No need to organize it." But believe me when I say that once you go for long periods of time without cleaning it, that junk drawer can turn into multiple drawers. Take a few minutes to get rid of things that you truly don't need. and leave the "good junk" that you actually use or want.

For me, making my home as clutter-free and organized as possible puts me at ease. Yes, a house should feel like a home and I completely think that more time should be spent making memories and actually living in it.  But a little organizing never hurt anyone. There's no right or wrong way. Just do what works for you!

2018 is going to be amazing! Get organized and clean now. You don't have to wait for spring cleaning. Start fresh and get organized. After all, it's a new year! Out with the old, In with the new.
